Detroit Confirms First Human West Nile Case
5 Sep
Summary
- First human West Nile virus case confirmed in Detroit.
- Mosquito samples tested positive for the virus.
- Health officials urge residents to eliminate standing water.

The Detroit Health Department confirmed the first human case of West Nile virus in the city on Friday, following severe weather. Chief public health officer Ali Abazeed announced the confirmation, noting that some collected mosquito samples had tested positive for the virus. This case marks Wayne County's second human infection in 2026.
Abazeed emphasized that most infected individuals experience no symptoms, with fewer than 20% developing mild, flu-like symptoms such as fever and body aches. However, less than 1% can develop severe neurological issues, requiring immediate medical attention. The health department advises the public to eliminate potential mosquito breeding sites, particularly standing water in containers and gutters.
Preventative measures recommended by health officials include limiting outdoor activity at dusk and dawn, maintaining screens on windows and doors, and wearing protective clothing. Treating standing water with larvicide and emptying water-holding containers weekly are also crucial steps to curb mosquito populations and protect public health.
