A vital new safety toolkit has been launched by Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service (DRFS) to empower unpaid carers and prevent devastating home fires.
This initiative follows a concerning review of fire incidents in the county affecting individuals with care needs. Between March 2022 and December 2024, DRFS attended 25 fires, resulting in 28 casualties, tragically including 16 deaths. The new toolkit provides crucial support for carers to think proactively about fire safety.
Community safety officer Matthew Thompson stated the aim is to prevent any fire-related serious incidents. The toolkit offers guidance on planning escape routes, utilizing appropriate detection and alarm systems, and accessing broader support services available for unpaid carers.
Designed for accessibility, the toolkit includes a British Sign Language (BSL) version. It disseminates essential fire safety measures, focusing on prevention while also detailing actions to take during a fire and recommending protective equipment to enhance home safety. This resource is particularly beneficial for individuals who may be at higher risk and require assistance with certain tasks.
Avril Simcox, a carer from Derby, found the toolkit "extremely helpful" and "easy to understand." She noted its relevance and how it raised awareness of overlooked safety aspects. Adam Burch from smoke alarm provider Aico highlighted the project's direct and lasting impact, emphasizing the importance of prevention in fire safety.
