Floss Fetish? Brands Swap Smoothness for Safety
18 Oct
Summary
- Some manufacturers are removing PTFE, a type of PFAS, from dental floss.
- Concerns link PFAS to adverse health effects, though not specifically for PTFE.
- New floss formulations use micro-textured nylon and elastic for durability.

Several dental floss brands are reformulating their products, trading smooth PTFE for alternatives due to concerns about PFAS, also known as "forever chemicals." Procter & Gamble confirmed that Oral-B Glide floss now uses a micro-textured fiber made from nylon and elastic, replacing PTFE and PFAS.
A 2019 study from the Silent Spring Institute found associations between reported Oral-B Glide use and higher blood levels of PFHxS, a different forever chemical. Researchers also detected fluorine, a marker for Teflon, in multiple floss samples, including Glide varieties.
Colgate began phasing out PTFE in 2022, citing consumer concerns while maintaining its safety. These changes align with increasing state-level restrictions on PFAS, with Minnesota notably banning their intentional addition to products like dental floss.
Experts recommend choosing PTFE-free floss. While some find the new textures rougher, maintaining a flossing routine is paramount for dental hygiene. Consumers are advised to contact manufacturers directly for specific ingredient information.
