A mysterious fever has affected over 50 residents at the Boganallur Sri Lankan Tamil rehabilitation camp near Kadayanallur since mid-July, prompting health officials to organize a mass cleaning operation and a medical camp. The 35-year-old camp houses more than 150 families.
A 13-year-old student died a month ago, with camp residents attributing her death to dengue and citing similar symptoms in over 50 other affected individuals. Another inmate is currently receiving treatment for fever at Tirunelveli Medical College Hospital. While the residents suspect a dengue outbreak, a health department official stated there is no concrete evidence yet, noting the absence of dengue-spreading mosquitoes within the camp.
However, the panic-stricken residents are urging the government to conduct regular medical camps and ensure proper garbage disposal. They complain that waste from surrounding municipalities and local businesses is dumped near their colony, creating insanitary conditions that they believe contribute to the illnesses. Residents feel their concerns are ignored due to their status.
