7 Feb
Summary
- Six-bed ICU for children with severe lung issues opened at RML Hospital.
- This is the first dedicated paediatric lung disease ICU in Delhi's government hospitals.
- The new unit aims to improve specialized treatment and training for medical students.

A new six-bed intensive care unit dedicated to children facing severe lung and breathing difficulties has been inaugurated at Atal Bihari Vajpayee Institute of Medical Sciences & Dr Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital. This specialized facility, opened on Friday, is the first of its kind in Delhi's government hospitals, focusing exclusively on paediatric lung diseases.
The unit will provide critical monitoring, ventilator support, and advanced tests for children with genetic, congenital, and severe respiratory conditions. Previously, such patients were treated in general paediatric ICUs. The Paediatric Pulmonology Division, approved in 2019, now features this ICU alongside a bronchoscopy lab and sleep lab, streamlining treatment for critically ill children.
Headed by Dr. Hema Gupta Mittal, the division anticipates that this new ICU will significantly benefit children from Delhi and neighbouring northern states. It is also expected to enhance the training and practical experience of postgraduate medical students, strengthening specialized paediatric care within the public health system.
