In a significant move for public health, the Delhi government has launched the Anmol (Advanced Newborn Monitoring and Optimal Life Care) scheme. This initiative, detailed in the 2026-27 Budget with an allocation of Rs 25 crore, will provide 56 free diagnostic tests to all newborns across the city's hospitals. The program focuses on the early detection of genetic and congenital disorders, aiming to prevent lifelong disabilities.
Dr. Seema Kapoor, who played a pivotal role in conceptualizing the scheme, highlighted that these tests are crucial, ideally conducted within 24 hours of birth and up to 7 to 10 days. Early identification of conditions, many of which may not show immediate symptoms, is critical. Delhi's program expands significantly on previous limited-scale screenings, positioning it as one of India's first large-scale state-led newborn screening efforts, with Kerala being the only other state with a similar free program.
The Anmol scheme utilizes advanced technology like Tandem Mass Spectrometry to screen for over 50 disorders from a single blood sample. Beyond metabolic and genetic conditions, it also integrates point-of-care screening for hearing impairment and congenital heart disease. Experts emphasize that such early diagnoses can prevent irreversible damage, and for some conditions like hypothyroidism and galactosemia, simple treatments can ensure a normal life for affected children.
