Delhi Govt Plans AIIMS-Like Medical Hub
13 Mar
Summary
- Delhi government plans to integrate four hospitals into a new autonomous medical facility.
- The proposed institute aims to enhance specialized treatment and medical education.
- This move seeks to optimize resources and reduce patient burden on GTB Hospital.

The Delhi government is considering a significant transformation of its healthcare infrastructure by merging four major hospitals: Guru Tegh Bahadur Hospital, Delhi State Cancer Institute, Rajiv Gandhi Super Speciality Hospital, and Institute of Human Behaviour and Allied Sciences. This initiative aims to create an autonomous, advanced multispecialty facility, tentatively named the Delhi Institute of Medical Sciences, modeled after the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS).
The proposal, developed by an expert committee, suggests bringing Rajiv Gandhi Super Speciality Hospital, Delhi State Cancer Institute, and Institute of Human Behaviour and Allied Sciences under the umbrella of Guru Tegh Bahadur Hospital. This consolidation intends to improve access to specialized medical treatments, expand opportunities for medical education and research, and optimize the utilization of faculty, infrastructure, and paramedical resources across the institutions.
Currently, Guru Tegh Bahadur Hospital handles a substantial patient volume, with approximately 10,000 patients daily. The integration seeks to alleviate this burden by distributing patients based on their specialized needs. Officials also noted that Rajiv Gandhi Super Speciality Hospital, despite having 650 beds, only utilizes about 250, indicating underutilization of its capacity.
Furthermore, the plan includes strengthening mental health services at the Institute of Human Behaviour and Allied Sciences, aligning its standards with those of the National Institute of Mental Health and Neuro Sciences. The government is also exploring the construction of an underground tunnel to facilitate safe patient and staff movement between the hospitals, enhancing operational efficiency.
