Court Demands Justification for HPV Vaccine Program
30 Jul
Summary
- Delhi High Court reviewed HPV vaccine program's justification.
- PIL cited safety concerns and lack of informed consent.
- Court scheduled next hearing for October 29.

The Delhi High Court is examining the rationale behind the HPV immunisation campaign.
On Wednesday, the court declined to halt the campaign but requested detailed explanations from the Centre, the Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO), and the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR). These authorities must submit their responses within four weeks, addressing the "justification for introducing the vaccine."
This action stems from a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) that sought a review of the decision to incorporate HPV vaccines into the Universal Immunisation Programme. The PIL highlighted concerns regarding the vaccine's long-term safety, the adequacy of informed consent procedures, and the monitoring of adverse events.
The court stated that "half-baked vaccines should not be administered" and stressed the importance of ensuring necessary protocols are followed. The PIL also requested district-wise and state-wise evaluations before any further expansion of the program. The next hearing is scheduled for October 29.
