Delhi HC Orders Urgent Recruitment for 1000+ Vacant Posts
7 Nov
Summary
- Delhi High Court ordered urgent recruitment for over 1,000 vacant hospital posts.
- Thousands of medical and non-teaching staff positions remain unfilled in Delhi.
- Recruitment process delayed, with new requisitions due in 2027.
The Delhi High Court has mandated the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) to commence recruitment for over 1,000 vacant general duty medical officer (GDMO) and non-teaching staff (NTS) positions in Delhi government hospitals. This exceptional order was issued on October 30, as part of an ongoing public interest litigation monitoring hospital facilities. The Delhi government reported over one-third of GDMO posts and more than 40% of NTS posts are vacant.
The government attributed vacancies to a shortage of eligible candidates, non-joining, and resignations. It noted that the UPSC often recommends fewer candidates than advertised. The court has directed the government to submit revised requisitions within two weeks. The UPSC is instructed to begin recruitment outside the annual cycle and will file a status report by December 17.
Additionally, 804 out of 4,462 paramedical staff posts are vacant, with recruitment handled by the Delhi Subordinate Services Selection Board. The High Court also noted a critical shortage of radiologists, leading to underutilization of medical equipment in several hospitals. To address this, hospital authorities have been asked to suggest solutions and assess outsourcing costs for scans.
