Delhi chemists trained to curb drug misuse
2 Apr
Summary
- Delhi trains chemists to prevent misuse of weight-loss drugs.
- Inspections find violations in five of seven clinics visited.
- Only specialists can prescribe these weight-loss medications.

In response to the increased availability of generic weight-loss drugs, Delhi's drug control department has initiated a proactive training program for chemists. This measure aims to prevent the misuse of potent medications, particularly following the patent expiration for semaglutide, a key ingredient in popular weight-loss drugs.
The department, in partnership with the Drugs Controller General of India (DCGI), has also launched surprise inspections across the city. These checks, which began on March 18, have already uncovered concerning practices. Officials reported that five out of seven inspected clinics exhibited violations, including the issuance of prescriptions without the presence of a specialist endocrinologist and pharmacies selling drugs without valid prescriptions.
Authorities are emphasizing that in India, only endocrinologists, internal medicine specialists, and cardiologists are permitted to prescribe these weight-loss drugs. The training for chemists includes educating them on verifying prescriptions to ensure they are issued by appropriate medical practitioners. These preventive actions are ongoing to deter illegal sales and ensure public safety.
