In a significant move to bolster women's access to sanitation, Delhi's Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) is transforming abandoned buses into dedicated mobile toilets. Fourteen locations across the city have been earmarked for these 'pink toilets', specifically catering to women in bustling areas lacking permanent facilities. This project, undertaken in collaboration with the Pinki Charitable Trust, will see the NGO manage the operation and maintenance of these unique facilities.
The identified sites include popular markets and transit points such as Lajpat Nagar, Green Park, Nehru Place, Hauz Khas, and areas near Old and New Delhi Railway Stations. MCD zonal offices are tasked with finalizing precise spots within seven days, ensuring feasibility regarding water and sewer connections. This initiative directly supports MCD's commitment to promoting women's dignity and safety in public urban environments.
Feasibility reports are due within a week, paving the way for an MoU and the project's rollout over the next few months. While residents have welcomed the development, some are keen to see long-term operational efficiency. The MCD assures regular monitoring to ensure the smooth functioning of these much-needed facilities, which aim to significantly improve women's mobility and well-being.
