Delhi Chemists Sell NSAIDs Without Rx Amid Monsoon

Delhi's drug control department has initiated inspections of chemist shops across the capital following concerns over the sale of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) without prescriptions. This action comes as sales of NSAIDs, including common medications like Aspirin and Ibuprofen, typically rise during the monsoon season, coinciding with increased cases of vector-borne diseases such as dengue and chikungunya.

Health officials reported that inspectors acting as customers found multiple chemists dispensing these drugs without valid prescriptions. While initial violations result in warnings, repeated offenses will face legal action. The department has urged the All Chemist Associations of Delhi to instruct their members against dispensing NSAIDs without a doctor's order and to encourage patients with fever or body aches to seek medical consultation.

Medical experts emphasize the dangers of self-medication with NSAIDs, especially when dengue is suspected. Dengue can cause a drop in platelet count and increase bleeding tendencies, while NSAIDs can further impair blood clotting. This combination can lead to severe internal bleeding and other life-threatening complications. Over-the-counter painkillers can also mask symptoms, delaying proper diagnosis and treatment.
