Delhi Hospital Boosts Blood Safety with New Tech
13 Oct
Summary
- Over 30,000 blood donor samples tested since January 2024.
- New technology drastically reduces infection detection windows.
- ILBS is Delhi's only public hospital with this advanced screening.
Since January 2024, the Institute of Liver and Biliary Sciences (ILBS) in Delhi has performed Individual Donor Nucleic Acid Testing (NAT) on more than 30,000 blood donor samples. ILBS is currently the sole government hospital in Delhi offering this advanced screening.
The Individual Donor-NAT facility employs molecular screening to identify infections transmissible via blood transfusions, thereby enhancing the safety of donated blood and its components. This technology notably reduces the detection window for HIV-1 to 4.5 days, hepatitis C to 2.2 days, and hepatitis B to 16.3 days.
The laboratory is equipped to support NAT screening across all Delhi government blood centers, ensuring sufficient capacity for current and future needs. This public healthcare initiative provides advanced molecular screening, improving early detection of HIV and hepatitis infections and bolstering patient safety during transfusions.
