A family in Pennsylvania is raising awareness about a deadly fungal infection after their beloved German shepherd, Beansie, succumbed to blastomycosis. The 5-year-old dog experienced a rapid decline over just a few days.
Initially, Beansie developed a non-healing wound, which quickly progressed to severe breathing difficulties. Veterinarians noted blastomycosis is considered exceptionally rare in Pennsylvania, with cases usually occurring elsewhere in the country.
Despite never leaving the local area, Beansie contracted the fungus, which resides in soil and decaying organic matter near fresh water. His sister, Vala, later tested positive for the same infection and is currently undergoing treatment.
The family hopes that by sharing their tragic experience, other pet owners can recognize early symptoms and seek timely veterinary care to save their pets.
