Congo Ebola Outbreak Becomes Deadliest Ever
17 Aug
Summary
- The Ebola outbreak has caused over 2,325 deaths.
- The current outbreak's death toll now exceeds prior events.
- The Bundibugyo species of Ebola has no approved treatments.

The Democratic Republic of Congo is currently experiencing its deadliest Ebola outbreak on record. Government data indicates that over 2,325 lives have been lost, surpassing the previous record of 2,299 deaths from the 2018-2020 outbreak. This current event, Congo's 17th Ebola outbreak, has also reached the largest number of cases in the country's history.
This devastating outbreak is caused by the Bundibugyo species of Ebola, a strain for which no approved vaccines or treatments currently exist. Weak health infrastructure, community resistance, and ongoing instability have severely hampered efforts to control its spread since it was declared on May 15. The case fatality ratio has alarmingly risen to 46%.
Globally, this outbreak is only surpassed by the 2014-2016 West Africa Ebola epidemic. Authorities are assessing existing Ebola treatments for potential protection, though evidence remains limited. Neighboring Uganda previously experienced a small outbreak of the same species, but successfully contained it with only two deaths and twenty confirmed cases before declaring it over last month.
