An 11-year-old dancer's persistent tiredness and aches were initially attributed to growing pains and puberty by medical professionals. However, her mother, Cheryl Barber, grew increasingly concerned as Tamelia quit dancing, experienced weight gain, and showed mood swings. Despite normal blood tests and reassurances from her GP, Barber noticed a significant lump on Tamelia's throat in September 2024.
After an extensive diagnostic process spanning over a year, the lump was surgically removed. In November 2025, doctors at Great Ormond Street Hospital confirmed Tamelia had thyroid cancer. She commenced radiotherapy treatment on May 8, 2026. Barber emphasizes the importance of trusting parental instincts, especially when faced with prolonged diagnostic journeys for children.
Doctors suggest the thyroid cancer may have been present for as long as three years before diagnosis. Barber, who is also caring for her younger daughter, Lily, has launched a GoFundMe to help cover hospital-related expenses. The campaign has already raised over £3,200, with Barber advocating for other parents to advocate for their children's health.
