DASH Diet: Your Key to a Sharper Midlife Mind
24 Mar
Summary
- DASH diet adherence may reduce perceived cognitive decline risk.
- Dietary patterns linked to brain health are strongest in midlife.
- Vegetables and fish intake, plus less red meat, aid cognition.

A new study indicates that following a healthy diet, such as the DASH diet, is associated with a reduced risk of self-perceived cognitive decline and improved cognitive function. The DASH diet, known for its benefits to cardiovascular health, emphasizes fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and low-fat dairy while limiting salt and red meat.
The research, which analyzed data from over 150,000 participants, found that the link between healthy eating and cognitive health was most significant when dietary patterns were adopted in midlife, between the ages of 45 and 54. This suggests a critical window for nutritional intervention.
Among the dietary patterns studied, the DASH diet showed the strongest association with lower subjective cognitive decline risk and better objective cognitive measurements. Other beneficial diets included the Healthful Plant-Based Diet Index (hPDI) and the Planetary Health Diet Index (PHDI).
Specifically, a higher intake of vegetables and fish, coupled with a lower consumption of red and processed meats, was linked to better cognitive performance. These findings underscore the importance of diet in maintaining brain health throughout life.
