A retired carpenter from east Leeds, Martin Williams, has ingeniously created a full-sized Dalek sculpture to support cancer research. Williams, a passionate Doctor Who enthusiast, built the Dalek, named Rustic, in his workshop, utilizing reclaimed pitch pine for its construction.
Diagnosed with advanced prostate cancer in 2020, the 73-year-old decided to combine his carpentry skills with his love for the iconic science fiction character. This creative endeavor aims to raise crucial funds for Yorkshire Cancer Research, a charity dedicated to finding better ways to prevent, detect, and treat cancer within the region.
The Dalek is scheduled to be sold at an auction in February, preceding the charity's 2027 Gala Dinner. Williams expressed pride in his creation, noting that its sale will directly contribute to research that saves lives in Yorkshire. Despite facing personal health challenges, including a recurrence of his cancer in November 2025, he dedicated significant time to completing this remarkable project.
