- The challenge is over 300 miles and involves swimming through the night.

A father of three from north Devon, England, is nearing the completion of an extraordinary challenge to swim across 10 of Switzerland's largest lakes, covering a distance exceeding 300 miles (483km). If successful, 40-year-old Neil will be the first person to accomplish the 'Legends of the Lakes' challenge. Having completed four lakes in 2025, he has six remaining. Neil's primary motivation is to raise awareness for Paediatric Autoimmune Neuropsychiatric Disorders Associated with Streptococcal Infections (Pandas), a condition his own son developed at 18 months old. Pandas can manifest with symptoms like obsessive-compulsive disorder and tics.
Neil emphasizes the mental fortitude required, noting that some swims exceed 20 hours, often necessitating swimming through the night without touching his support boat and treading water to eat. He also highlights the physical difficulty of swimming without a wetsuit, which removes buoyancy aids. He believes breathwork, incorporating a meditative state to lower his heart rate, is crucial for his preparation. The next lake on his list is Lake Maggiore, a 54km swim. Neil's journey underscores the treatable nature of Pandas, which he hopes more people will recognize, advocating for awareness so that affected individuals can receive timely antibiotic treatment.
