IVF Donor Mix-Up: 30 Children Affected in Cyprus

At least 30 children, predominantly British, are feared to have been conceived through IVF treatments in northern Cyprus using the wrong sperm or egg donors. Investigations have uncovered that approximately half of these concerning cases are linked to the Dogus IVF Centre. Parents who carefully selected anonymous donors based on detailed profiles now suspect that the requested donors were not used in their fertility treatments.

Concerns escalated when DNA tests conducted on 11 of the affected children revealed genetic ancestry tracing back to Turkey or surrounding countries, contradicting the expected Western European origins of the selected donors. This has led to significant distress for families, who are left questioning the true identity and medical history of their children's biological donors. The Dogus clinic has been blacklisted by the world's largest sperm bank, Cryos International, since 2016 due to concerns over unmet sperm orders.

Northern Cyprus, a territory with less stringent regulations than the EU, is a popular destination for fertility treatments due to its lower costs and wide donor selection. However, reports suggest a systemic problem that may involve negligence or deception, impacting not only Dogus but also other clinics. Investigations by the territory's Ministry of Health are ongoing, but further information has been limited. Fertility experts have expressed shock at the scale of the issue, indicating it transcends isolated incidents and points to a broader problem within the industry.
