28 Jul
Summary
- 40% of Americans consume less produce due to illness fears.
- Cyclosporiasis has sickened 16,000 people across over 40 states.
- Experts urge continued produce consumption despite outbreak risks.

Nationwide cyclosporiasis outbreaks have led approximately 40 percent of Americans to decrease their consumption of fresh fruits and vegetables. This foodborne illness, caused by the parasite cyclospora, has reportedly sickened 16,000 individuals across over 40 states, with Michigan alone reporting over 9,200 cases. While over 300 people have been hospitalized, no fatalities have been recorded as of the report.
Experts caution against completely avoiding produce, highlighting its essential vitamins and minerals crucial for health. They note that reduced intake can lead to weight gain, heart disease, poor gut health, and an increased risk of premature death. Instead, consumers are advised to stay informed about outbreak announcements, wash produce thoroughly under running water, and maintain good hand hygiene to mitigate risks.
Although washing produce does not eliminate cyclospora, it remains a vital step in reducing exposure, especially for items with non-smooth skins. Public health officials continue to investigate the sources of the outbreaks, with some cases preliminarily linked to contaminated iceberg lettuce, parsley, and cilantro. The primary recommendation is to discard implicated foods while maintaining a balanced diet rich in fruits and vegetables.
