US States Strain Under Cyclospora Outbreak

Michigan is contending with a severe cyclosporiasis outbreak, reporting over 8,100 cases, which is significantly straining its health resources. This surge in parasitic disease cases is partly attributed to federal funding cuts implemented in 2025, which reduced the number of infectious disease workers and county health staff available.

Health officials in affected counties are struggling to keep pace with the high volume of cases. For instance, Ingham County, with around 700 cases, has only investigated about half due to its limited nursing staff. This has led to a decision to prioritize new cases over older ones to better understand the outbreak's ongoing causes.

The response has been further complicated by what some state and local officials describe as lagging communication from federal agencies. While the FDA linked the outbreak to iceberg lettuce from Taylor Farms, some patients have no clear connection to fast-food chains or lettuce consumption, suggesting other sources may be involved.

In past emergencies, the CDC typically played a leading coordination role. However, some state and local officials report not having regular, formal meetings with federal partners, receiving information from news sources instead. A spokesperson for the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, however, stated that the CDC was holding daily meetings with federal and state officials.

Tracking cyclospora requires labor-intensive interviews, making the response time-consuming. For example, Oakland County, with over 1.3 million residents and 710 reported cases, has had to reassign nurses from other programs. This situation is compounded by the fact that staff numbers have decreased since the COVID-19 pandemic.
