A foodborne parasite, Cyclospora cayetanensis, sparked a viral meme trend in late June and July 2026, with headlines dubbing it the 'explosive diarrhea parasite.' The outbreak, initially reported across 20 U.S. states, quickly drew widespread attention due to its infamous symptom. Health officials investigating the spread indicated that contaminated fresh produce, particularly lettuce, was the likely source.
As the number of cases climbed past 100 nationwide, restaurants like Taco Bell preemptively removed ingredients such as lettuce and pico de gallo. This situation became fertile ground for internet humor, with users creating numerous memes. The jokes predominantly focused on the exaggerated symptom of 'explosive diarrhea' and the association with fast-food establishments, transforming a public health concern into a source of online amusement throughout July 2026.
