As of 2026, Pennsylvania has recorded 45 confirmed cases and three probable cases, adhering to CDC reporting guidelines for symptom onset from May 1 onward, excluding travel-related cases. This outbreak is unprecedented, with thousands of cases this year far exceeding the usual annual count of 200 to 1,000.
Produce giant Taylor Farms has voluntarily recalled all iceberg lettuce originating from central Mexico due to its connection to the outbreak. To mitigate infection risks, the Pennsylvania Department of Health recommends rigorous washing of fruits and vegetables, scrubbing firm produce, removing damaged parts, and prompt refrigeration. Thorough cooking and handwashing before and after food preparation are also advised.
