Lettuce Safe? Cyclospora Outbreak Clues Emerge
31 Aug
Summary
- Recalled lettuce from outbreak is off market, officials say.
- Over 11,000 illnesses linked to outbreak, with 495 hospitalizations.
- Investigation ongoing, but consumer risk from recalled product passed.

Federal health officials have stated that iceberg lettuce is now considered safe for consumption, as all recalled products associated with a recent cyclosporiasis outbreak have been removed from the market. The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) confirmed that the implicated lettuce is no longer available in stores or restaurants. This assurance comes after an investigation linked shredded iceberg lettuce from Taylor Farms, sourced from Mexico, to a significant number of illnesses.
The outbreak resulted in 11,458 reported illnesses across 20 states, with 495 individuals hospitalized and two fatalities. Officials noted that most reported illnesses began before the July 17 recall announcement. While the investigation continues, the immediate consumer risk from the recalled product is believed to have passed. The FDA is continuing inspections of growers and processing facilities.
Experts advise that while the recalled product is off the market, general food safety practices remain crucial. Cooked vegetables, or fruits that can be peeled, are suggested as lower-risk alternatives for those seeking extra caution. The outbreak is expected to be declared over in the coming weeks once new cases cease to emerge and all affected products are confirmed out of the supply chain.
