New Super-Opioid Cyclorphine Emerges, 10x Stronger Than Fentanyl
2 May
Summary
- Cyclorphine, a new synthetic opioid, is up to 10 times more powerful than fentanyl.
- The drug has been detected in Louisiana parishes and 12 other U.S. states.
- Current drug test kits and law enforcement tools may not detect this emerging threat.

Authorities in Louisiana have issued a high alert due to the emergence of cychlorphine, a potent synthetic opioid that has already been detected in at least 12 other U.S. states. This dangerous substance, sometimes disguised as common painkillers, has been identified in Caddo, DeSoto, and Ouachita parishes. Lab testing indicates cychlorphine could be up to ten times more powerful than fentanyl, a highly potent opioid itself, raising alarms about its potential to surpass fentanyl's devastating impact.
Public health officials express grave concern because standard drug test kits and law enforcement screening methods are not equipped to detect cychlorphine. This presents a significant challenge in identifying and combating its spread. The drug was first identified by a DEA lab in Florida in 2024 and has since been linked to at least 41 deaths across the U.S. between July 2025 and February 2026. Experts believe its rise may be linked to crackdowns on other synthetic opioids, with production likely originating in Asia.
The prevalence of cychlorphine in counterfeit pharmaceutical forms drastically increases overdose risks. Reversing an overdose from such a potent drug could require multiple doses of naloxone, commonly known as NARCAN. With its presence confirmed in states like New York, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, and California, officials stress the unprecedented danger of using street-level drugs and urge reliance on legitimate, tested sources.
