This dangerous compound, believed to have originated in China in 2024 and spread through Europe before reaching the U.S. later that year, is proving difficult to track.
Officials report that cychlorphine may be up to 10 times more potent than fentanyl, a synthetic opioid already responsible for a large percentage of overdose deaths. This extreme potency dramatically increases the risk of fatal overdose, as users may succumb to respiratory failure before medical help can arrive.
Adding to the danger, standard toxicology screenings and drug test strips frequently fail to detect cychlorphine without specialized testing. This lack of widespread, rapid detection complicates emergency response efforts and hinders swift identification of outbreaks, allowing the drug to circulate undetected in the illicit supply.
In Tennessee alone, the Knox County Regional Forensic Center confirmed cychlorphine's presence in 41 deaths between July 2025 and February 2026, with five additional fatalities under review. Detections have now been reported in nine other U.S. states, and health agencies are expanding surveillance and testing protocols to monitor its prevalence.
