5 Oct
Summary
- CSL partners with Alentis Therapeutics for rare disease treatment.
- Deal worth up to $1.6 billion, with $355 million upfront.
- Lixudebart targets rare kidney, liver, and lung diseases.
CSL, a prominent Australian biotechnology company, announced a strategic co-development and co-promotion agreement with Alentis Therapeutics, based in Switzerland. This collaboration centers on lixudebart, a novel therapeutic candidate targeting rare kidney and liver diseases. The agreement represents a substantial investment, potentially reaching up to $1.6 billion before accounting for development funding.
Under the terms of the partnership, CSL has committed an upfront payment of $355 million to Alentis. The Swiss firm is also eligible to receive up to $1.2 billion in milestone payments tied to the drug's commercial success. This deal grants CSL joint rights to develop and market lixudebart, which is currently undergoing Phase 2 trials for a severe autoimmune kidney disease.
Lixudebart, previously known as ALE.F02, has received orphan drug designation from the US FDA for its potential to treat idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, a chronic lung disease. The companies intend to advance the drug's development for focal segmental glomerulosclerosis (FSGS), a chronic kidney condition, and primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC), a liver disease for which no approved therapies currently exist.
If lixudebart achieves commercial success, CSL and Alentis will share the global profits, with CSL receiving 55% and Alentis receiving 45%. This collaboration underscores a shared commitment to addressing significant unmet medical needs in rare diseases.
