10 Jul
Summary
- A hospital ward has been closed due to a rare crusted scabies outbreak.
- Health board is managing the outbreak with infection control procedures.
- Scabies cases are reportedly rising in the wider region.

Steffan Ward at Glangwili Hospital in Carmarthen has been closed by the Hywel Dda health board due to an outbreak of crusted scabies. This rare and highly contagious form of the illness necessitates the ward's closure to manage the situation.
Infection prevention and control procedures are being strictly followed. All patients and staff identified as contacts have been notified and offered treatment, irrespective of symptom presence. Enhanced monitoring and specialist team support are also in place.
The health board noted a general increase in scabies cases across Carmarthenshire, Pembrokeshire, and Ceredigion, which is contributing to hospital outbreaks. The ward will remain closed until infection control guidance permits a safe reopening.
