Twelve people fell ill during a recent National Geographic-Lindblad Expeditions voyage, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The gastrointestinal illness affected nine of the 66 passengers aboard the National Geographic Sea Bird vessel, along with three crew members.
Voyage dates for the affected cruise were May 26 through May 31. Passengers primarily experienced symptoms of vomiting and diarrhea. The CDC has stated that the cause of the outbreak is currently unknown. The ship is presently operating in Alaska.
In response, the ship's crew implemented enhanced disinfection protocols and isolated sick individuals. This incident marks one of several gastrointestinal illness outbreaks logged by the CDC on cruise ships this year, with some previously attributed to E. coli and norovirus.
