Cruise Ship Illness: 1,700 Stuck on Board
13 May
Summary
- Over 1,700 passengers and crew were confined to a British cruise ship.
- Authorities suspect a gastrointestinal illness outbreak aboard the vessel.
- The ship's disembarkation was suspended in Bordeaux, France.

French authorities have mandated that over 1,700 passengers and crew on the British cruise ship Ambition remain on board due to an outbreak of gastrointestinal illness. The vessel arrived in Bordeaux, France, on Tuesday evening. Disembarkation was suspended and port interactions were restricted on the recommendation of the regional health agency.
Up to 50 passengers reportedly displayed symptoms consistent with an acute digestive infection. These individuals were treated by the ship's doctor and isolated in their cabins. A medical team was dispatched, and samples are currently being analyzed to identify the pathogen and assess transmission risks.
Authorities have explicitly stated there is no connection between this incident and a recent hantavirus outbreak on the MV Hondius, which resulted in fatalities and a multi-country health response. The measures imposed on the Ambition are temporary and subject to continuous review.
Ambassador Cruise Line, the operator, confirmed that a 92-year-old passenger died on Sunday, though this death is not currently linked to the illness and is awaiting a coroner's report. As of late Wednesday morning, 48 passengers and one crew member were exhibiting gastrointestinal symptoms.
