An outbreak of Carbapenemase-Producing Organism (CPO), a type of antibiotic-resistant bacteria, has been confirmed at the Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast. The Belfast Trust, in collaboration with the Public Health Agency, is managing the situation.
The first case of CPO was identified on April 28, 2026, and the outbreak was officially declared on April 30, 2026. Patients with a history of extensive antibiotic use are considered more vulnerable to this infection.
Strict infection control protocols, including enhanced cleaning of affected wards, have been implemented. Patients who test positive for CPO are being isolated in single rooms.
Staff caring for these patients are required to follow specific protective measures. The Trust has confirmed that no fatalities or serious illnesses have been directly attributed to this particular CPO strain. Families of affected patients are being kept informed.
