27 Mar
Summary
- A father suffers long-term complications and blindness post-Covid.
- Family savings depleted due to ongoing medical expenses and lost income.
- Son becomes primary caregiver after his father's severe illness.

The Covid-19 pandemic's impact continues to haunt families like the Bandgars, living in Bhigwan, Maharashtra, six years after the initial outbreak. Vishal Bandgar now balances a new government job with caregiving for his father, Namdeo, who contracted severe Covid in May 2021.
Namdeo's recovery was complicated by a secondary infection, mucormycosis or black fungus, requiring extensive treatment including surgery and costly medication. This ordeal led to the loss of his income as a cab driver and significant depletion of family savings.
Vishal stepped in as a primary caregiver, altering his life's trajectory as he prioritized his father's health. His mother, Ratnaprabha, also suffers from failing health due to the prolonged stress of caregiving.
Maharashtra reported a high number of mucormycosis cases following the second wave, particularly among patients with uncontrolled diabetes and those who received steroid or oxygen treatment. Timely diagnosis and treatment are crucial, but long Covid symptoms are often exacerbated by such complications.
The financial burden remains immense, with essential antifungal drugs costing upwards of Rs 1,500 per strip. Despite clearing civil service exams and securing a job, Vishal's years were significantly impacted, yet he remains close to his parents to manage emergencies.
