COVID's Hidden Sign: Are Your Eyes the First Symptom?
19 Oct
Summary
- Conjunctivitis can be the sole initial symptom of COVID-19.
- Eye symptoms appear in up to 14% of positive COVID-19 cases.
- Winter conditions worsen the risk of conjunctivitis.

As COVID-19 cases increase with the spread of the XFG strain, a pharmacist is drawing attention to subtle eye symptoms that may indicate infection. Pharmacist Noel Wicks noted that conjunctivitis, presenting as red, gritty, or sticky eyes with potential discharge, can be the primary or sole symptom for some individuals. Clinical studies indicate that eye issues occur in as many as 14% of those who test positive for the virus.
A meta-analysis involving over 6,300 people found that approximately 11% of COVID-19 sufferers experienced eye symptoms, with conjunctivitis being the most common manifestation. Wicks emphasized that the current winter conditions are particularly conducive to the development of conjunctivitis, creating a "perfect storm" for eye infections. Early recognition of symptoms such as the whites of the eyes turning pink, or experiencing itchiness and discharge, is crucial for timely management.
