Couple's Council Flat Nightmare: Leaks and Mould Emerge
24 Jul
Summary
- Couple endured a year of continuous leaks in their Southampton council flat.
- Mould particles were detected in hospital swabs of one tenant.
- Council apologizes, promises full repair after arranging temporary accommodation.

A couple in Southampton described their council flat as a year-long nightmare due to persistent leaking ceilings and widespread mould.
Taylor and James Wilson reported dripping water in their bathroom, kitchen, and hallway since April 2025, which has significantly worsened. James Wilson was hospitalised with pneumonia and a collapsed lung in May, with hospital staff finding mould particles in his swabs. He stated that the dripping is constant and embarrassing, making it difficult to host visitors.
Taylor Wilson, who has autism and anxiety, found himself spending more time than desired in the distressed flat. He described water dripping outside their bedroom door, causing a slip hazard, and even seeping through electrics in the kitchen. The couple refused a hotel offered by the council, deeming it unsuitable.
Southampton City Council acknowledged the issue, stating maintenance staff have visited multiple times. They apologized for the disruption and confirmed a full repair would commence once alternative accommodation for the tenants is arranged. The council indicated no other one-bedroom flats were currently available.
