30 Apr
Summary
- Family waited almost two years for essential home upgrades.
- Alterations are needed for a severely disabled young daughter.
- Council acknowledges delay and prioritizes urgent work.

A Tameside Council has issued an apology to a family who experienced a nearly two-year delay in receiving necessary major house alterations for their severely disabled daughter. The family, including parents Carol Anne and Nick, who also face health challenges, had been promised the work by August 2024. The council stated that the delay had impacted family life and that the work is now being prioritized and will be carried out with urgency.
Carol Anne described the situation as "autopilot," highlighting the physical strain of caring for their six-year-old daughter Francesca, who has a severe and complex condition, and their five-year-old son. Francesca is autistic, cannot feed herself, and is doubly incontinent. The planned home improvements include a "safe space" room for Francesca, an internal window for easier monitoring, a downstairs wet room, and a new front door with ramp access, aiming to significantly improve the family's quality of life.
