Cottage Cheese Recall: Pasteurization Failure Puts Thousands at Risk
26 Feb
Summary
- Thousands of cottage cheese containers recalled due to faulty pasteurization.
- Defect in pasteurization process may not have killed all pathogens.
- No illnesses reported, but health risks exist for vulnerable groups.

Saputo USA has initiated a recall of thousands of cottage cheese containers due to a pasteurization failure. The defect means the process may not have sufficiently killed harmful pathogens in the raw dairy, posing a potential health risk. The affected cottage cheese, sold under Walmart's Great Value brand, was distributed to 24 states between February 17 and February 20, 2026, with best-by dates from April 1 to April 3, 2026.
Health authorities have not yet reported any illnesses linked to the recalled products. However, the FDA emphasizes that consuming under-pasteurized dairy can be especially dangerous for the young, elderly, and immunocompromised individuals. The faulty pasteurizer has since been repaired and verified by the California Department of Food and Agriculture, and no other products from the facility were affected. Consumers with the recalled cottage cheese are urged to return it to Walmart for a full refund.
