Cosmetic Surgery Risks Exposed: Patients Warned
11 Mar
Summary
- Industry groups warn patients about cosmetic surgery risks.
- California board member calls for transparency in doctor investigations.
- Lawsuits allege disfigurement, deaths linked to cosmetic procedures.

Investigations into cosmetic surgery chains have prompted consumer warnings from industry groups representing plastic surgeons. The American Society of Plastic Surgeons is advising patients to "do their homework" before undergoing procedures such as liposuction or Brazilian butt lifts, highlighting the inherent risks. Scott Hollenbeck, past president of the society, stressed that plastic surgery is real surgery with potential complications.
In California, a member of the state's medical licensing board has called for increased transparency in how physicians are disciplined. TJ Watkins believes the public should be informed when doctors are under investigation for alleged misconduct, a process that can take years. This call for transparency comes after an examination of allegations linking cosmetic surgeries to disfiguring injuries and patient deaths.
One California plastic surgeon, Heidi Regenass, is named in lawsuits alleging three patient deaths following liposuction and fat transfer operations. While she denies negligence, a complaint filed by the California medical board in February 2025 accused her of "repeated negligent acts." Separately, patient lawsuits have accused some cosmetic surgery companies of employing undertrained doctors and using high-pressure sales tactics, allegations the companies dispute.
The growing U.S. body-contouring market, which involves procedures costing up to $20,000, has seen limited regulatory oversight. There is no federal database tracking company safety records or complication rates. Industry stakeholders suggest opportunities for better legislation, including regulating post-surgical recovery centers and enhancing enforcement of existing laws, while also emphasizing patient vigilance.
