22 Feb
Summary
- Coriander seeds may lower cholesterol and blood pressure.
- Studies show increased good cholesterol and decreased bad.
- Spice costs as little as 6p per serving for health benefits.

A widely used spice, costing merely 6p per serving, is showing promise in reducing cholesterol levels and blood pressure. Coriander seeds, also known as ground coriander, are a staple in various cuisines like curries and stews. Their consumption could potentially lower the risk of severe health issues such as heart disease, heart attack, and stroke.
Research published in the Journal of Environmental Biology (2008) demonstrated that laboratory rats fed coriander seeds experienced a reduction in low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol, commonly referred to as 'bad' cholesterol, while simultaneously increasing high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol, the 'good' type.
Further studies in the Journal of Ethnopharmacology (2009) indicated that coriander seeds could also effectively lower blood pressure. The research suggested these effects might be mediated through various mechanisms, including cholinergic and calcium antagonist pathways, with diuretic activity also contributing to its hypertension-fighting properties.
