15 Oct
Summary
- A 54-year-year-old woman's contraceptive coil revealed a large tumor.
- She was diagnosed with stage three ovarian cancer in June 2023.
- After treatment, she now has no evidence of disease.
A 54-year-old woman's life was potentially saved when her contraceptive coil inadvertently revealed a significant health issue. Experiencing severe, stabbing abdominal pain since March, she believed her coil was the cause and sought its removal. Doctors' appointments and referrals followed, with her pain intensifying to the point she could barely move.
During one desperate visit, scans showed a 13cm tumor pressing against her coil, external. This led to a diagnosis of stage three ovarian cancer in June 2023, a condition she feared might be terminal within two years. However, following chemotherapy and surgery, she has achieved remission.
Reflecting on the experience, she credited the coil for alerting her to the cancer. She expressed frustration with the time it took to be taken seriously, advocating for easier diagnosis pathways for women, especially given her long-standing endometriosis diagnosis from her mid-20s.
