Sleep Schedule Key to Heart Health
2 Nov
Summary
- Consistent sleep schedule linked to better heart health.
- Irregular sleep increases risk of heart attack and stroke.
- Regular bedtimes and wake times protect cardiovascular health.

A comprehensive analysis of over one million nights of sleep has revealed that a consistent sleep schedule is vital for maintaining heart health. The research, presented at the American Heart Association's Scientific Sessions 2026, indicates that variations in bedtime and sleep duration can negatively impact cardiovascular well-being.
Experts found that changes in sleep timing from night to night over a six-month period were associated with a 20 to 23 percent higher risk of serious cardiac events, including heart attack, stroke, and heart failure. Each 29-minute increase in sleep length variability also correlated with elevated risks.
Conversely, achieving more complete sleep cycles nightly was linked to a 28 percent lower risk of atrial arrhythmia. However, unusually long sleep cycles were found to increase the risk of heart attack or stroke by 55 percent.
Lead researcher Dr. Nguyen Minh Tuan Viet emphasized that while sleep quality can be difficult to control, consistency in bedtimes and wake times is an actionable step for protecting heart and blood vessel health.
