Consciousness Lingers After Heart Stops, Study Shows

Summary
- Brain activity can persist for up to an hour after cardiac arrest.
- Nearly 40% of survivors reported awareness during resuscitation.
- Disinhibition may allow access to full consciousness after death.

A groundbreaking study published in Resuscitation indicates that consciousness might continue even after the heart ceases to beat. Lead researcher Dr. Sam Parnia of NYU Langone Medical Center studied 53 cardiac arrest survivors across 25 hospitals in the United States and the United Kingdom.
Many of these individuals reported vivid experiences and a sense of awareness during the period when their hearts were not functioning. Dr. Parnia noted that researchers detected 'normal and near-normal brain activity' for up to an hour into resuscitation, distinct from dreams or hallucinations.
Approximately 40% of participants described a perception of being separate from their bodies and aware of their surroundings. EEG readings captured spikes in brain waves associated with thinking and awareness between 35 and 60 minutes post-cardiac arrest.
This work challenges the long-held belief that the brain sustains permanent damage within 10 minutes of oxygen deprivation. Dr. Parnia explained that as the brain shuts down, the removal of normal inhibitory systems, a state known as disinhibition, might unlock access to one's entire consciousness, including memories and emotional states.
