Two-year-old conjoined twins, Olivia and Gianna, originally from the Philippines, have undergone a successful separation surgery in Saudi Arabia. The complex, six-hour procedure was performed by 22 specialists at the King Abdullah Specialist Children's Hospital.
The twins were conjoined from the chest to the abdomen in a rare condition known as "thoraco-omphalopagus," sharing heart membranes and the liver. Doctors confirmed the operation was smooth and the twins are now in intensive care, in stable condition, and receiving post-operative monitoring and respiratory support.
The Saudi Conjoined Twins Programme (SCTP) conducted the surgery, with the Saudi government reportedly covering all expenses. The twins' mother expressed immense happiness for their opportunity to live separate lives. The SCTP has a history of performing such intricate surgeries, with Olivia and Gianna being the fourth pair to be separated by the program.
