2 Apr
Summary
- Congo declared the end of a two-year mpox outbreak on Thursday.
- The outbreak is believed to have caused over 2,200 deaths.
- WHO had previously declared it a global health emergency.
The Democratic Republic of Congo has officially declared an end to its two-year mpox outbreak. Health Minister Roger Kamba announced on Thursday that the infectious viral disease is no longer classified as a national emergency for the vast central African country. This declaration comes after a period that saw significant loss of life, with estimates suggesting over 2,200 suspected deaths during the outbreak which began in 2024.
Initially, the mpox outbreak in Congo prompted the World Health Organization to issue a global health emergency declaration due to its spread to neighboring nations. While WHO ended its global emergency status in September, the situation within Congo remained critical until this recent announcement. The Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported more than 161,000 suspected cases, including nearly 37,000 confirmed infections, underscoring the scale of the epidemic.
