Congo Ebola Spreads to Sixth Province Amidst Alarming Rate

The Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo has now reached a sixth province, Bas-Uele, as reported by the Africa CDC Director-General. This expansion follows the death of an individual who had traveled from Haut-Uele to Bas-Uele. The ongoing epidemic in eastern Congo is evolving rapidly and is on track to surpass the scale of the deadliest Ebola outbreak in history.

With over 2,100 fatalities recorded from more than 4,500 cases, the current outbreak is claiming lives at nearly triple the speed of the 2014-16 West Africa crisis. Adding to the challenges, health workers at a treatment center in the highly affected Ituri province have initiated a strike due to three months of unpaid salaries, leading to temporary facility closures. The full extent of the epidemic is still unknown, with health authorities noting that a significant majority of new cases are occurring outside monitored contacts, indicating an "alarming" spread.
