Congo Ebola Outbreak Claims Third Child in Orphanage
20 Jun
Summary
- A 6-month-old girl, the third child from an orphanage, died from Ebola.
- The Bundibugyo Ebola strain has no approved treatment or vaccine.
- Outbreak is three times worse than a 2000 Uganda outbreak.

Mourners recently attended the burial of a 6-month-old girl who died from Ebola, the third child from an orphanage to succumb to the disease. This latest death underscores the difficulties authorities face in managing the current outbreak in eastern Congo.
The Bundibugyo strain of Ebola, responsible for this outbreak, lacks any approved treatment or vaccine, leaving even healthcare workers vulnerable due to insufficient protective gear. This strain was not initially tested for, contributing to its extensive spread.
The current outbreak has reached 894 confirmed cases with over 200 deaths, significantly exceeding a 2000 outbreak in Uganda. The situation is complicated by local resistance to safe burial practices, which are essential for containment. While the outbreak is concentrated in Ituri, cases have spread to North Kivu, South Kivu, and across the border into Uganda.
This outbreak is considerably less deadly than the 2014 epidemic, but its rapid spread and lack of targeted interventions remain a serious concern for public health officials.
