Congo Ebola Outbreak: Data Gaps and Violence Plague Response

One month after Ebola cases were confirmed in eastern Congo, the full extent of the outbreak is unclear. Significant data gaps and persistent community resistance, sometimes violent, are hampering response efforts. Official figures of 782 confirmed cases and 181 deaths are likely an understatement, with difficulties in harmonizing data from various sources. Testing remains a major weakness, and many communities lack access to necessary kits.

Responders face ongoing challenges including attacks on burial teams and patients absconding from treatment centers. The World Health Organization has warned that such incidents pose a threat across the region. Hospital capacity for treating and isolating Ebola patients is insufficient, with only 14 facilities across three provinces, while the outbreak has already spread to 31 health zones. Aid groups emphasize the urgent need to strengthen diagnostics, surveillance, and community engagement.
