The Ebola outbreak in Congo is accelerating at an unprecedented speed and has not yet peaked, with projections indicating it could be three times its current known size. This epidemic is history's fastest, outpacing the devastating 2014-2016 West Africa outbreak in terms of cases and deaths by its 13th week.
The outbreak has recorded 2,516 deaths out of 5,290 confirmed cases. A critical concern is that less than 10% of cases are linked to known contacts, far below the rate needed for control. Experts believe the outbreak began spreading in February, months before its official declaration.
Adding to the complexity, the outbreak is caused by the Bundibugyo virus, for which there are no approved vaccines or treatments. Its milder symptoms may lead some patients to delay seeking medical attention. The disease has spread to 56 health zones across six provinces, including a previously unaffected one.
Community deaths outside of treatment centers constitute a significant and rising portion of fatalities. While the overall case fatality rate is 46.7%, it is considerably higher in some regions. Many individuals are not reporting symptoms early due to misinformation, preference for traditional medicine, or fear of isolation.
