Congo Ebola: Deadliest, Fastest Outbreak Recorded
27 Oct
Summary
- Ebola outbreak surpasses 10,000 confirmed cases.
- Nearly half of those infected have died, deadliest in Congo.
- Outbreak has spread to three other African countries.

As of October 27, 2026, the Ebola outbreak in Congo has reached a grim milestone of 10,000 confirmed cases. This epidemic is the fastest-growing and deadliest in the country's history, with nearly half of those infected succumbing to the virus. The Bundibugyo virus, responsible for this outbreak, lacks an approved vaccine or treatment.
Compounding the crisis, the disease has spread across Africa, with cases recorded in Uganda, Kenya, and Nigeria, making it the most geographically widespread Ebola outbreak to date. Response efforts are significantly hampered by ongoing armed conflict, poor infrastructure, and deep-seated mistrust among communities fueled by misinformation. These obstacles make it difficult to persuade individuals to report symptoms and seek care.
The situation is further complicated by ongoing transmission chains that health authorities are unaware of, with about 80% of cases originating outside monitored contacts. This highlights the critical challenge of bringing the outbreak under control, as at least 95% of cases ideally need to stem from known contacts. The outbreak has also disrupted essential health services, including routine vaccinations and maternal care, leading to increased maternal mortality and diverting attention from other health crises like cholera.
