Cancer Alert: Common Meds Now Labeled Carcinogenic

The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), a World Health Organization agency, has classified three commonly prescribed medications as carcinogenic to humans. These include hydrochlorothiazide, used for high blood pressure; voriconazole, an antifungal; and tacrolimus, an immunosuppressant.

Hydrochlorothiazide and voriconazole are associated with an increased risk of squamous cell carcinoma of the skin and cancer of the lip, as they enhance skin sensitivity to ultraviolet radiation. Limited evidence also links tacrolimus to non-Hodgkin lymphoma, potentially due to its immune-suppressing effects which reduce cancer surveillance.

These medications are used by millions globally. Patients are strongly advised not to discontinue their prescribed treatment without consulting a healthcare professional, as managing underlying conditions remains crucial. Alternative treatments may be available and should be discussed with a doctor.
